Suddenly this morning, I found out that OpenAL (no other details given) is on the list of installed programs on my Win7 32bit machine. Any ideas on what this is, what it does and where it may have come from?

Go to your list of installed programs

Find the entry for OpenAL. Now look at list of Installed Programs and find the "Installed On" date on which your OpenAL was installed.
You should see OpenAL and all the other programs that were installed on that date. This will be helpful to narrow down what program may have installed OpenAL.

It is a 3D sound software interface. It's mainly for games and not used for other purpose. And as far as I know, it doesn't use a lot of resources.

OpenAL is a cross-platform audio application programming interface. It is designed for efficient rendering of multichannel three-dimensional positional audio.

Find the entry for OpenAL:

Look at the "Installed On" column and take note of the date
Now click on the header/Title of the "Installed On" column (this should order all of the software entries by install date)

Now look down the Installed Programs list and find the "Installed On" date on which your OpenAL was installed. You should see OpenAL and all the other programs that were installed on that date. This should help you narrow down what program may have installed OpenAL.

OpenAl is a cross-platform audio application programming interface (API). It is designed for gamers that use 3D multi channel audio. it's used by a lot of games, and some hardware devices like Creative Audio cards, Go pro devices, etc. mainly for enhanced 3D audio effects, whatever those are.

OpenAL originally developed by Loki Software in 2000, Open Audio Library, more commonly known as OpenAL, is an audio API and available for multiple operating systems. OpenAL is used for rendering multi-channel 3D positional audio. The style of OpenAL's API is very similar to that of OpenGL.

OpenAL was also designed to replace other proprietary 3D audio systems, like EAX and A3D. It is also capable of simulating attenuation, the Doppler effect, and material densities; adding realism to video games.

Look it's used by a lot of games, and some hardware devices like Go Pro devices, Creative Audio cards, use it mainly for enhanced 3D audio effects, whatever those are. So if you have some preinstalled games, you got it from there.

It’s an audio API (Application Programming Interface), You can find out how it came by checking the date on which it was installed. Find the entry for OpenAL, note the date, check for all the programs that were installed on that date and then you could guess as to which program could have led OpenAL to be installed on your machine.
