Magento offers a high-level of customization and functionality when compared to Wordpress. For ecommerce website you can go for Magento. for a normal website with basic features wordpress is good.

Magento is mainly focused on ecommerce website. While wordpress is used for content management platform. WordPress is free and simple to customize. If you don’t have a high budget and don’t need the special features of Magento, then using WordPress with WooCommerce is probably a good choice.

Magento and Wordpress are two of the most popular Content Management Systems(CMSs) used worldwide. Having worked on both the systems I can doubtlessly say that Wordpress is the most ‘easy to use’ platform you will find. Compared to Magento it is fairly easier to learn, understand and customize but yet if you ask me I would recommend you Magento only because you are specifically asking for an e-commerce website.

While both platforms are content management systems, it is clear that Magento was developed specifically for eCommerce. Its functionality overall is tailored towards a business structure and selling online. ... However, the functionality that is provided by WordPress' eCommerce plugins is limited
