It can be hard to make out which option is the best when it comes to security. It doesn't matter if it’s Proxies or VPN or Tor, why because at times you will not want to consider using Proxy Server, because it is more or less like a proxy server. If you are using it together then it will lead to complication. So I think VPN is more reliable and secure compared to Proxy server. Nevertheless Tor does compliment VPN tunnels so it can also be considered.

Advantage

Tor is a layered router which allows you to be anonymous while browsing the Internet. A decentralized system it does not connects directly, but through network. The main benefit is that your IP address is hidden.

VPN - allows you to create a secure connection thereby allowing you to appear as if you were in a remote destination or some other place.

Proxy - This is just another VPN, For that directs your traffic through another computer instead of your own. Only the paid proxy provides stability and reliability.

Disadvantage

Tor -Though your data is encrypted all along the relay nodes, the last connection point at the last relay section is vulnerable and can be compromised, the chances are more if you are on website with no SSL. Tor is known to be slowing down your browsing speed.

VPN - stores data and communications logs, in the event a government agency ask the VPN provider to reveal logs, users would be exposed.

Proxies- Goes through your original IP address to the destination site, it is not recommended when security and privacy is the prime concern.
